What is Server OS File Backup?

Azure Server Backup can protect your critical applications, including SharePoint, Exchange, and SQL Server, files and folders. Maintain the safety of all production applications running on virtual machines by ensuring back up of the virtual machine state, the OS state, and the associated data using the virtual machine backup service. Server OS File Backup ensures application-consistent backup using VSS on Windows virtual machines, and file-system consistent backup data on Linux virtual machines – without having to shut down the VM during backup. You have the ability to choose your backup times, how long to keep the data, and later restore experience. All this can be done using the Microsoft Azure classic portal including tracking long running operations in the job view.

What is Azure Site Recovery?

Your environment can be protected by automating the replication of the virtual machines based on policies that you set and control. Site Recovery can protect Hyper-V, VMware and physical servers and you can use Azure or your secondary datacenter as your recovery site. Site Recovery coordinates and manages the ongoing replication of data by integrating with existing technologies including System Center and SQL Server AlwaysOn.

Site Recovery monitors the state of your protected instances continuously and remotely from Azure. When replicating between two sites you control, your virtual machines’ data and replication remains on your networks. All communication with Azure is encrypted. When replicating to Azure as the secondary site, your data is encrypted and you can also select encryption for data at-rest.

A complete backup & recovery plan must include testing. If you don't test your backups you won't know if they work or how long it will take to restore and get your business running again.
